Martin Joseph Hillenbrand was born August 1, 1915, in Youngstown, Ohio, and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Arts in 1937. He received a Doctorate in Philosophy in 1948 from Columbia University and completed postgraduate work at Harvard in 1950.
